DENVER – Ryan Crowe spends his time in Floydada wearing two distinct hats. During the week he is executive director of the Floydada Economic Development Corporation. On Sundays, you will find him leading music at First Baptist Church.
But Ryan has another role he serves outside of Floyd County, that of advocate for people (like himself) living with a bleeding disorder. For his efforts Ryan was recently honored with the Loras Goedken Outstanding Leadership Award from the National Bleeding Disorders Foundation.
The award is given annually to a person that ‘demonstrates exceptional leadership and engagement’ to their regional chapter of the national non-profit. Ryan has served two stints as president of Texas Central Bleeding Disorders, having worked with the Dallas-based organization since 2007.
“Ryan has used his gifts and talents in so many ways over the years. His dedication to serving the community is inspiring,” said Texas Central Bleeding Disorders executive director Julie Frederickson-Jones. “Ryan shares his knowledge and support in the kindest way while always having the best interest of the community in mind.”
Ryan, 46, was diagnosed at birth with Hemophilia, a rare bleeding disorder that keeps blood from clotting properly. He has addressed his struggles with access to care at both state and federal levels, testifying in 2023 to both the Texas house and senate health committees in favor of legislation that banned the use of copay accumulators by insurance companies in the state.
“Ryan has made himself somewhat of an advocacy legend by never backing down, speaking his truth and helping others find their voice,” added Frederickson-Jones.
The award Ryan received was named for fellow Texan Loras Goedken, himself a longtime advocate who died in 1997 due to complications from AIDS. Goedken was one of eight family members to have died from HIV-contaminated blood used to treat hemophilia.
Ryan was presented the award by Goedken’s three children at NBDF’s 77th annual meeting on August 24 in Denver. The Goedkens were joined in the presentation by Frederickson-Jones, NBDF Board President Ryan Grifith and NBDF CEO Phil Gattone.
