LUBBOCK, TX – The Floydada Whirlwinds and Lady Winds Cross Country teams wrapped up their season with a strong showing at the regional meet in Lubbock this week — marking what may be the first time in decades that both teams qualified for regionals in the same year.
Head Coach Travis Pittman shared his excitement over the milestone achievement and the dedication shown by his runners throughout the season.
“Both groups did really well today,” Pittman said. “I’ve asked people that have worked in the district when was the last time the boys and girls teams went to regionals in the same year and so far they can’t think of one. They have checked back to the late 80’s and are still looking, but it looks like this might be the first time in school history Floydada has sent both in the same year. Very proud of both groups!”
At regionals, the Floydada boys placed four runners inside the top 60, while the Lady Winds had three runners in the top 60 out of a field of 175 competitors — a strong finish that reflects the continued growth of Floydada’s cross country program.
This year’s dual qualification is a point of pride for the community and a testament to the hard work of the athletes and coaches.
If anyone knows when the last time both Floydada boys and girls teams qualified for regionals in the same season, please share in the comments — we’d love to update our local record!
