LUBBOCK, TX – Lockney Elementary Gifted and Talented students in second through fifth grades recently had the opportunity to expand their learning beyond the classroom during a field trip to the Region 17 Education Service Center in Lubbock. On February 10, 2026, the students attended the S.T.E.A.M. Showcase, where they participated in a variety of hands-on learning activities designed to challenge creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
The S.T.E.A.M. Showcase focuses on five key areas of learning: Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics. These subjects are combined to help students develop real-world skills through interactive exploration and collaboration. By integrating the arts into traditional STEM subjects, S.T.E.A.M. encourages students to think creatively while applying logic and innovation to solve complex challenges. The program is designed to prepare students for future careers by helping them build skills such as teamwork, adaptability, and analytical thinking.
Throughout the day, Lockney students explored numerous interactive stations that allowed them to experiment with engineering design concepts, engage with technology-based learning tools, and participate in science and math challenges. These hands-on experiences help students better understand how classroom lessons connect to real-world applications. Activities like those offered at the showcase allow students to explore topics such as coding, robotics, construction design, and creative problem solving while encouraging curiosity and innovation.
The field trip also provided students with exposure to potential career pathways in growing fields such as engineering, computer science, medical technology, architecture, and digital design. Events like the S.T.E.A.M. Showcase help students begin discovering interests and talents that can shape future academic and career goals while building confidence in their abilities to tackle new challenges.
The Lockney Elementary Gifted and Talented program is coordinated by Amber Graves, who works to provide enrichment opportunities that extend student learning beyond the traditional classroom. Courtney Garrett serves as the GT instructor and teacher and organized the trip to provide students with an engaging and educational experience. Opportunities such as this field trip are designed to support advanced learners by giving them access to unique educational experiences that promote higher-level thinking and creativity.
Experiences like the Region 17 S.T.E.A.M. Showcase highlight the importance of providing students with opportunities to explore innovative learning environments. By participating in interactive educational events, Lockney students continue developing skills that support academic success and prepare them for future opportunities in an ever-changing world.
