LOCKNEY, TX – Lockney students and visiting teams showcased their welding skills during the Longhorn Build-Off held March 13, 2026, at the Lockney High School welding shop. The event brought together talented young welders from several schools, creating a day of friendly competition, hands-on learning, and craftsmanship.

Teams worked throughout the competition to demonstrate their welding abilities, precision, and teamwork while completing their assigned projects. The build-off highlighted the importance of career and technical education programs that help prepare students for careers in skilled trades such as welding, fabrication, and construction.

When the projects were complete and judging concluded, Roswell earned first place honors in the competition. Lorenzo 1 finished in second place, followed by Water Valley in third. Individual recognition was also awarded, with Tye Graves being named the event’s Top Welder for his standout performance and craftsmanship during the competition.

The Longhorn Build-Off provided students with the opportunity to test their skills in a competitive setting while also connecting with peers who share an interest in welding and the trades. Events like this not only encourage friendly rivalry among schools but also give students valuable real-world experience that can benefit them as they continue their education or enter the workforce.

The event was organized by Lockney welding instructor Mr. Knox, whose efforts helped bring the competition together and provide a memorable experience for students and visiting teams alike.

Two Lockney alumni also returned to lend their expertise to the event. Adrian Hernandez and Colby Guerrero, both members of the Lockney High School Class of 2024, served as judges for the competition. Their participation added a meaningful connection between current students and recent graduates who once worked in the same welding shop.

Lockney ISD officials and organizers expressed appreciation to all of the teams who traveled to Lockney to compete and help make the Longhorn Build-Off a successful event. The competition highlighted the growing interest in welding programs and the dedication of students working to develop valuable trade skills.
