LOCKNEY — COVID stopped a lot of events in 2020, including an 83-year consecutive string of Floydada vs. Lockney football games dating back to 1936, but it’s back full-bore this year.

The series actually began in 1917, but there have been some interruptions throughout the years, according to KFLP broadcaster Randell Sims. Sims has been scouring the Floyd County Historical Museum archives and the internet researching the history of the matchup.

“I have found that the website TexasHighSchoolFootballHistory.com is a great resource, and one of the best in documenting a school’s history in football,” Sims said. “According to this website, Friday night will be the 99th meeting between Floyd County rivals with Floydada leading the series 67-30-1.”

Sims notes that 2020 was not the first cancelation of the game in its nearly 100-year history.

“There were seven years that the Longhorns and Whirlwinds did not play each other, but there were three years when they played one another twice in the same season,” Sims said.

Each meeting of the Floyd County rivals brings high expectations every season, regardless what the records may be. With 2020’s cancellation, 2021 will be no exception.
