FLOYD COUNTY – The month of February has had its grueling days of cold weather to deal with, especially for the athletes competing in outdoor sporting events.
For example, both tournaments the Floydada Lady Winds have played in for consecutive weekends at Slaton and Tahoka have had their challenging days with the temperatures being around the freezing mark, but the wind has brought the chill factors into twenties or even the teens at times.
“The girls have been wearing multi-layers of clothing primarily insulated under gear and have played in the hoodies. Each player has a handwarmer pouch in their pockets, plus the Tahoka Tourney has provided heaters for the dugouts which makes it pretty comfortable,” said Floydada coach Armando Morales.
When asked what aspects of the game seem to be affected by the frigid conditions, Morales explained, “the outfielders have the least movement action and their ability to close the glove properly has been noticed. The pitcher’s throwing hand outside for a length of time has been tough for them. But, we have taken extra precautions with the extra clothing, the hand warming pouches and warm dugouts. They are definitely dealing with adversity,” explained Morales.
The cold weather has also played havoc on the Lockney Tournament this weekend for the Lady Horns, and baseball tournaments in Post and Tulia that the Floydada and Lockney baseball teams are competing in.
