MUNCY – The cleanup from Sunday’s fire that burned through approximately 400 acres of grassland near the Floyd County Friends Unity Center continued into the evening Monday and is expected to take more time still.
Crews from Xcel Energy were out along highway 70 Monday replacing power poles destroyed in the fire. While there were no electrical outages reported with Sunday’s fire, Cable and internet service on Suddenlink – which uses power poles to house transmission lines – was disrupted until early Monday morning.
TxDOT reopened the highway Sunday evening but as of Monday afternoon signs warning drivers of smoke along highway remained in place near the intersection of Highway 70 and FM 786, where the fire began.
A total of eight fire departments and multiple agencies assisted Lockney and Floydada firefighters in getting control of Sunday’s blaze. Following the fire both departments praised the work of local farmers for bringing water tanks to assist in keeping nearby houses and buildings from being destroyed.
