Janice Lloyd (Floydada)
Janice Elaine Thompson Lloyd, 91, of Floydada, Texas, passed away peacefully in her home in the company of her loved ones on July 8, 2022.
Janice was born December 3, 1930, in Courtland, California, a descendent of the Floyd County Pioneer Family of E.P. Thompson. After losing her parents in a tragic accident when she was a small child, Janice was raised by her beloved aunt, Nonnie Thompson, in Long Beach, California. She and her brothers, Bill and Barry, were surrounded with love and attention from the extended Thompson family, who had also relocated to California from Lockney during the Great Depression.
Janice graduated with honors from Woodrow Wilson High School in Long Beach in 1948. Shortly after graduation, she and her brothers moved with her Aunt Nonnie back to Lockney to rejoin her extended family. She attended First United Methodist Church in Lockney and worked at the local pharmacy until she was awarded a full scholarship to attend McMurry College in Abilene. She graduated from McMurry College with a Bachelor of Science in 1952 and began teaching elementary students in Floyd County. Even after becoming a full-time farmer’s wife and mother, Janice shared her love for reading with students she tutored, her boys, and her grandchildren.
Janice married the love of her life, Alfred Louis Lloyd of Floydada, in June 1953, at Lockney’s First United Methodist Church. They met when she worked at the pharmacy and shared a love and devotion that spanned more than 55 years before Louis’ passing in 2011.
Janice was an active member of Floydada’s First United Methodist Church for over 60 years. She served on numerous committees, taught Sunday School for decades, and joined her dear 1950 Study Club friends weekly to share the Good News. She was dedicated to the United Methodist Women and their projects. Janice and Louis hosted scores of Wycliffe Bible Translators and visiting Methodist missionaries.
Janice was a humble woman of action, quietly sharing her gifts volunteering with groups and initiatives across the community and state, including the American Lung Association, the American Cancer Society, for which she was presented the Sword of Hope, and the Spirit of Sharing (SOS) in Floyd County. She was also active in the Texas Rural Electric Women’s Association as a Charter Member. It was Janice’s dedication to sharing the gift of books with others, especially children, that led her to give hours of time and energy to the Floydada Public Library. She served for many years on the library board and was instrumental in helping secure a permanent, free-standing public library facility for Floyd County.
Janice was a consummate hostess. She and Louis loved hosting their friends for dinners and lively bridge games and their family members from near and far for great visits and amazing storytelling. These events created wonderful memories for their four sons: Drew, Steve, Paul, and Patrick, as well as their families. She was, without fail, always gracious, humble, and kind to all – a true guiding light to her family.
Janice was preceded in death by her loving husband, Louis, and their son, Paul, as well as her brothers, Bill Thompson and Barry Thompson.
Left to cherish Janice’s memory are her sons, Drew Lloyd and wife, Pam, of Plainview; Steve Lloyd and wife, Judy, of Floydada; and Patrick Lloyd and wife, Eva, of Dallas, as well as her daughter-in-law, Lori Lloyd Ross, and husband Tom, of Floydada. She also leaves her grandchildren, Stacey, Shane, Jeremy, Tana, Henry, and Emma, as well as her step-grandchildren, Neishay, Malissa, and Jewelet. Janice leaves behind her great-grandchildren, Hannah, Marcus, Hazel, Sydney, Levi, Zakry Paul, and Cody, who each had very special places in her heart. Janice was especially close to her sister-in-law, Janet Lloyd Webb, of Fairfax, Va., and her cousins, Kerry Martin and Mike Martin, of Long Beach, Ca., Betty Bruce and Gene Rankin of Lubbock, Tx., and Marjetta Story of Sabinal, Tx., as well as her sister-in-law Sandra Thompson of Plainview, Tx., and her Lloyd and Thompson nephews and nieces, all of whom survive her
Janice’s family is so very grateful for the friendship, devotion, and love shared by Mary Ann Ibarra, Leticia Luna, Priscilla Adams, Destiny Barrientos, Annalicia Luna, Christy Marmolejo, Maria Luna, Dinah Rocha, and Erica Gonzales. Janice loved each of them as family.
A Memorial Service for Janice will be held Monday, July 11, 2022, at 10 A.M., at First United Methodist Church in Floydada. A private burial will precede the service. Visitation will be held Sunday, July 10, 2022, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Moore-Rose Funeral Home in Floydada.
