Seven Sentence Sermon: ‘Til I Want No More

drought
drought

“Fill my cup, Lord
I lift it up, Lord
Come and quench this thirsting of my soul
Bread of Heaven, feed me ’til I want no more
Fill my cup, fill it up and make me whole”

Those words are the chorus of a familiar hymn, “Fill My Cup”, from the late Methodist minister Richard Blanchard.

In 1 Kings 17, we hear about the prophet Elijah who God had been providing for near a brook (think a playa lake) after telling the king that a drought was punishment for the evil deeds of Israel.

When the brook dried up, God sent him to visit a widow and her son in Zarephath, down to their last meal.

Elijah told her to make bread for him first, and then her flour and oil would never run out – and it did not.

How often do we remain in a spiritual drought because we’re comfortable – whether it be a playa lake or a home without food?

Though God provided for Elijah in the wilderness, the prophet had to leave this place to go to a town with the same problems (lack of food), then rely on a mother who was preparing her final meal before starvation: both had to do something that seemed illogical.

Where is your cup, and are you asking to have it filled, or are you dying in an old familiar place?
