TAHOKA, TX – It took five years, but on Thursday afternoon, a coach for O’Donnell passed the torch to a Senior in Floydada.

In reality, it wasn’t a torch but rather a spot in the history books for Floydada Lady Winds softball.

Carisa Fernandez officially claimed the top spot in Career Home Runs with her 19th long ball – a two-run shot – from former record holder Kylie (Ricketts) Allen, who set the mark back in 2019.

Fernandez leads a squad that has made deep runs in the playoffs year after year, and her coach, Armando Morales, was impressed with the 1st inning blast that propelled Floydada past Tahoka 7-3.

For Morales, he’s been able to watch both players “go yard” as he coached Allen from 2016 to 2019.

Today, Allen is the new head coach for the 1A O’Donnell Lady Eagles softball team, beginning the school’s second season in the sport.
