AUSTIN, TX – A new Texas law will bring big changes to the way fans experience school sporting events beginning with the 2025–2026 school year. Senate Bill 2929 gives game officials the authority to immediately remove any spectator who engages in disruptive or inappropriate behavior. Unlike past practices, no warning will be required before removal.

The law was introduced in response to growing concerns about fan behavior at athletic events across the state. Instances of spectators arguing with officials, heckling visiting teams, or creating hostile environments have been on the rise. With SB 2929 in effect, lawmakers and athletic organizations hope to restore the focus of school events to student athletes and promote a culture of respect.

For communities in Floyd County, including Lockney ISD and Floydada CISD, this change means fans will need to be more mindful about how they support their teams. Both districts regularly host football, basketball, volleyball, and other athletic competitions that draw strong community support. The new rules will apply at all home and away events where UIL competition takes place.

Under the law, once a spectator is asked to leave, the decision is final and cannot be appealed. Schools are allowed up to three incidents before losing the ability to host home officials, which could significantly impact scheduling and game-day logistics for local programs.

District leaders are reminding fans that sportsmanship is a shared responsibility. Cheering for home teams, respecting officials’ decisions, and creating a welcoming environment for visiting athletes are all ways the community can help maintain the integrity of school athletics.

For Lockney and Floydada, where sports play an important role in community spirit, the new law highlights how essential it is for parents, students, and supporters to set a positive example. By keeping the focus on encouragement and respect, local schools can continue to host games that bring the community together while staying in compliance with state regulations.
