SUDAN, TX – Lockney Junior High students traveled to Sudan on Wednesday, December 10, to compete in an academic UIL meet, where they represented their school with pride and professionalism. Students demonstrated strong preparation and focus throughout the competition, earning several individual and team awards against five other schools.
Overall, Lockney Junior High placed fourth out of six schools, a solid finish highlighted by multiple standout performances across all grade levels.
Sixth grade students earned several top placements, including a first-place finish in spelling by Davis Duniven, with Marcus Gross adding a fourth-place finish in the same event. The sixth-grade spelling team also earned first place overall. Remi Rogers placed fifth in art, while the sixth-grade art team earned second place. In dictionary skills, Olivia Powell placed fifth, and the team finished third. Easton Alvis earned fourth place in maps, graphs, and charts. In ready writing, Sara Sanchez placed fourth and Alice Nunez placed fifth. The sixth-grade social studies team rounded out the results with a third-place finish.
Seventh grade competitors also delivered impressive results. Luke Wetzel earned first place in chess, contributing to the seventh-grade team’s first-place finish in the event. Alex Lopez placed first in modern oratory, with Jordan Hill finishing sixth. Neveah Contreras placed fifth in art, and the seventh-grade art team earned second place. In number sense, Ramiro Salazar placed sixth, and the team finished third. Sarah Silva and Adahli Solis placed fifth and sixth in ready writing, respectively. Judah Rejino earned first place in social studies, helping the seventh-grade team secure second place overall in the event.
Eighth grade students added to the overall success with strong team performances. The eighth-grade chess team placed third, with Gage Baker earning fourth place individually. The eighth-grade teams earned third-place finishes in maps, graphs, and charts; science; and social studies. Brighton Reese placed fifth in modern oratory, and Ed Lopez earned fifth place in spelling.
The strong showing in Sudan reflects the dedication of Lockney Junior High students and their commitment to academic excellence, as well as the support of teachers and sponsors who helped prepare them for competition.
