FLOYDADA, TX – Floydada Collegiate ISD has announced the hiring of Jeff Smith as the district’s new Athletic Director and Head Football Coach, bringing decades of coaching experience and a strong record of success to the Whirlwinds’ athletic program.

Smith joins Floydada from West Texas Stinnett, where he most recently served as Head Football Coach. Under his leadership, the Comanches made an impressive playoff run this season, advancing all the way to the state semifinals. Smith has been with Stinnett since 2014, serving as offensive coordinator from 2014 to 2017 before taking on the roles of Head Football Coach, Boys Athletic Coordinator, and Maintenance Director beginning in 2023.

Smith’s coaching career spans more than two decades across several West Texas programs. He began at Merkel ISD from 2002 to 2005 before moving to Bushland, where he served as head baseball coach and offensive coordinator from 2005 to 2011. During that time, Bushland posted a 15-1 football record in 2009 and advanced to the state championship game. Smith also led Bushland’s baseball program to three consecutive state tournament appearances in 2010, 2011, and 2012.

After his initial stint at Bushland, Smith returned to Stinnett as offensive coordinator, helping guide the program to both regional semifinal and quarterfinal appearances. In 2017, he was named Head Football Coach and Athletic Director at Brownfield before taking the same roles at Hale Center, where he served from 2018 to 2023.

Coach Smith and his wife, Jennifer, are both educators and have four sons. Their oldest, Derek, is currently an assistant coach at Seminole ISD, while Drew works as a soccer trainer at TCU. Deacon, a high school senior, has signed to play football at Hardin-Simmons University next year, and Dayne is currently a high school freshman.

Floydada Collegiate ISD officials expressed excitement about Smith’s arrival, citing his leadership, experience, and commitment to student-athletes as key strengths he brings to the district.

Smith is expected to begin his duties immediately as he prepares for the upcoming school year and the future of Whirlwinds athletics.
