LOCKNEY — The Lockney Longhorns were one of the top turn-around football programs in the Panhandle/South Plains when they finished with a 7-2 season record in 2020 and qualified for the playoffs in the COVID-stricken season that caused numerous cancellations. The Longhorns averaged close to 40 points per game in 2020.
The Longhorns have a new head coach in Cory McCombs, a native of Hamlin. Indications are that Lockney will be a run-first offense in a spread formation, and aggressive on defense. McCombs has spent the largest portion of his 20-plus year coaching career as a defensive coordinator.
Dave Campbell’s Texas Football (DCTF) has picked the Longhorns third in District 5-2A-II behind Ralls and Hamlin. They play both of them on the road in 2021.
