WHITE DEER, Texas — The Lockney Longhorns fifth and sixth grade concluded a perfect season of 9-0 by winning two games this past weekend to claim the Top of Texas Tiger League Championship in six man football.
The Longhorns entered the playoff tourney with a 7-0 record and number one seed. Lockney lived up to the favorites position by beating the Lefors Pirates 39-6 in the semi-finals on Saturday, followed by a 26-7 win over the Valley Patriots on Sunday afternoon for the title.
In both games, Lockney jumped out to leads in the first half. The Longhorns got ahead of Lefors 20-0, and then 12-0 over Valley.
The Longhorns had their share of big plays in the two wins. Sixth grade running backs Evan Salazar and Logan Rodriguez had two touchdowns apiece against Valley including a 75-yard run by Salazar and Rodriguez with a 40-yard gallop. Salazar and Rodriguez also had a ‘pick six’ each in the victory over Lefors. Quarterback Caycen Wright directed the explosive Longhorn attack and scored multiple times on extra point plays.
Lockney ended up outscoring their opponents by an average margin of 41-5 on the season.
