LUBBOCK — Cross country is a very unique sport, but it shares a common trait with all other sports — the competitors want to be a part of something big and meaningful. The UIL Region I meet fits that description with more than 2,000 runners (boys and girls combined) from classes 1A to 6A competing on one of the top 10-rated cross country courses in Texas at Mae Simmons Park. In class 2A, where Floydada and Lockney competed, there were in excess of 300 combined harriers on Tuesday afternoon.

Mae Simmons gets high marks for the quality of the course and its difficulty, but it gets the highest grade for the way Texas Tech conducts and manages the huge field of the largest geographical high school region in Texas. Region I, as far as size goes, is in itself bigger than the other states that touch the boundaries of the Lone Star State.

New Deal, who swept the District 4-2A meet a few weeks ago at Lubbock Christian University, made a strong showing as expected by qualifying their boys team for State with a third place finish behind Plains and Christoval.

The Lady Lions just missed a trip to Austin as a team by one slot in fifth place. The top four teams advance to the State Championships. New Deal was able to place two individuals in Miranda Sosa and Madison Nunes to qualify.

Here are the results of the Floydada and Lockney girls teams, plus a pair of Longhorn individuals:
