LOCKNEY — The Lockney girls have done an excellent job of winning on their home floor at Longhorn Gym this season going 4-0. The Lady Horns kept that home winning streak intact with a solid 48-36 win over the 3A Roosevelt Eagles on Tuesday thanks largely to some solid shooting beyond the 3-point arc. Five different Lockney players made 3-pointers, led by Gabriella Cervantes with three.
Lockney (12-4) jumped out to a 9-4 lead in the first quarter and continued to stay in front 18-13 at halftime. The Lady Horns outscored Roosevelt in both quarters of the second half by a 30-23 spread.
The Lady Horns trio of senior Gabriella Cervantes plus juniors Adrianna Villarreal and Mariah Ascencio continued their double-figure scoring. This time it was Cervantes leading with 12. Villarreal had 11, and Ascencio made 10. For the season, Villarreal is the top scorer at 14 points-per-game, then Cervantes at 12 ppg, and Ascencio with 11 ppg.
Villarreal and Ascensio both had eight rebounds apiece to lead the Lady Horns against Roosevelt. Lockney has also received good offensive and defensive support from junior Senayda Bernal and sophomore Adilayah Jones, plus some quality minutes at different times from multiple players off the bench.
The Longhorns won their game against Kress as well, 60-37 over the Kangaroos. The Lockney boys are now 5-3.
