FLOYDADA – The Floydada Lady Winds (15-6, 2-0) utilized a solid first-half lead of eight points and held off a New Deal Lady Lions (16-12, 2-1) rally in the fourth quarter to take a 38-36 win on Friday night at Whirlwind Gym. It was the first time Floydada had defeated New Deal in girls basketball since the two schools have been in the same district for eight years according to FCHS Athletic Director Todd Bandy.

The Lady Winds have now won two close ballgames in district play including a 48-47 victory at Lockney on Tuesday against the Lady Horns (20-5, 1-1).

“It has been a good week for us,” said an elated Floydada coach Adam Zepeda after the win.

“We are finally starting to win some close games after losing a pair overtime games (Roosevelt and Sterling City) in December. The team has stuck to the game plan and has executed very well. We just need to keep rolling, but 2-0 feels good right now,” Zepeda added.

Floydada won a pair of tight games just before district started against Dimmitt 35-31 and Tahoka 51-48 which has carried over to 4-2A action.

The Lady Winds were led by sophomore post Sierra Snowden’s 11-points. Sophomore point guard Zay Santos just missed the double-figures in scoring with nine. Floydada continued with strong rebounding led by junior post Lailah Burks with 11. Burks had 17-rebounds in the win at Lockney.

Snowden gave Floydada another strong performance with eight rebounds.

New Deal’s Ghenevieve Vasquez was the game’s high scorer with 22.
