1 dead in Lockney highway crash

UPDATE 10:45 P.M.: Floyd County Sheriff’s Deputies say the outside lanes of eastbound US 70 have reopened to traffic. Westbound lanes are still diverted through the city.

DPS Troopers confirmed earlier Tuesday evening the driver of the pickup was heading southbound through the intersection of the highway at Sandhill Road when it collided with the 18-wheeler heading east.

UPDATE 4:00 p.m.: One person is confirmed dead following the crash, the other person involved was transported to Lockney’s Mangold Memorial Hospital. Texas DPS troopers have been called to the scene to investigate, the highway will remain closed and traffic is being diverted through Lockney.

LOCKNEY – Multiple police and fire departments responded to an accident involving a semi trailer and pickup Tuesday afternoon in Lockney.

The accident happened around 3 p.m. near the Longhorn Express gas station along the highway.

The 18-wheeler overturned and was laying facing east in the median between the east and westbound lanes.

The pickup truck was 100 yards to the west of the semi, also in the median. A small brush fire broke out following the crash.

Lockney Police, along with their EMS and Fire Department, as well as Floyd County Sheriff’s deputies, TxDOT crews and Floydada Police, Fire and EMS all responded to the scene.

Floyd County’s Justice of the Peace for precincts 2 and 3 was also called to the scene.

At least one person was taken by ambulance from the scene. The road remains closed.
