LOCKNEY – Jonathan Thiebaud is a man who in his own words likes to “put down roots.”

The 15-year coaching and teaching veteran has served three school districts in his career. San Saba, Stanton and Lockney. “When I get somewhere, I get involved in the community. I like to have those relationships,” Thiebaud said Tuesday afternoon.

“I’m a firm believer in being in the community, investing in the community and that community is going to turn around and invest in you too.”

He and his family are members of the Methodist church in Lockney, and Pastor Auggie Aguilera is a fan. “He’s a great guy,” Aguilera said at the mention of Thiebaud’s name.

Thiebaud (pronounced like the football player, in case you were wondering) has proven himself to be an outstanding coach in the past year for the Lockney Longhorns. And he’s now been recognized for his commitment and quality. Last Friday it was announced Thiebaud had been promoted to Athletic Director for Lockney ISD.

“You want to talk about a humbling experience,” Thiebaud said of the moment his students were told of the news. “I knew the kids would be excited, but to see their reaction, it was a really special moment for me.”

That reaction was electric. “Our kids just erupted when they got the news,” Superintendent Jim Baum told the Record.

In observing Thiebaud interact with his athletes you can see glimpses of where their excitement comes from. He’s a competitor, but more importantly he is a mentor, as you can see in the quote he gave to KCBD’s Pete Christy on Tuesday. “They know who I am, if it’s tiddlywinks, if it’s Madden in the locker room, if it’s racing down the hall, out on the football field or on the court, we’re going to compete.”

And what message does he have for the community he’s already established himself in? It’s one of thanks and appreciation. “Thank you for the opportunity and the chance to lead… It’s going to be a fun ride this next year.”
