Experience should play large for 2022 Whirlwinds

FLOYDADA – If returning experience means something, then the 2022 football season has a bright outlook for the Floydada Whirlwinds. Coach J.R. Compton returns more than 20-lettermen from a 3-8 record including the playoffs in 2021 that lost only three seniors to graduation. The Whirlwinds could have double-digit returning starters on each offense and defense, plus have had 18-months under Compton’s program. The roster is expected to have nine seniors on the team.

Floydada’s strength should be the specialty positions of running backs and receivers on offense, while the defense could be strong in the secondary and linebackers. How much stronger and larger the Whirlwinds will be in the trenches on both sides of the ball will be the biggest question.

Floydada will also face a very familiar schedule in 2022 that includes only two new opponents against the Ralls Jackrabbits in the season opener on August 26, and the Olton Mustangs in 2-2A-I action for the regular season finales on November 4. The remainder of the schedule will be against teams the Whirlwinds have played the last two years and some schools even longer.

Floydada will play two non-district games and a trio of 2-2A-I games at Charles Tyer Stadium. The home opener will be the traditional Floyd County Championship game with the Lockney Longhorns on September 1.
