LOCKNEY, TX – “The spirit of this is that our identity, purpose, and mission stay the same,” explains Auggie Aguilera, pastor of First United Methodist Church (FUMC), on a weekend vote by the Northwest Texas Conference to disaffiliate with the larger denominational organization, UMC.

On September 16, 2022, a church-wide vote was held, requiring a two-thirds majority to make a move and return to local autonomy for the first time since 1968.

“There’s value,” he says, where “local church culture can be more clearly defined” and gives way to becoming more involved as a church in the community.

One thing that will change, the Plainview-native adds, is the name.

Last night, the Administrative Council voted to change the name to Lockney Methodist Church in anticipation of joining other congregations in the region under the umbrella of the new Global Methodist Church.

Methodists can trace their roots in Floyd County back to 1890 when the Reverend R.M. Morris led two dozen believers in organizing a new congregation. Over 130 years later, the church continues to be active in the community.

Sunday morning services begin at 9:00 am with donuts and coffee, Sunday School begins at 9:30 am, and the worship service starts at 10:30 am at 120 West Poplar Street.
