FLOYDADA — Floydada Collegiate ISD has canceled classes on Friday due to a rising number of COVID-19 cases in the community, the district said in a statement Thursday. Schools will be empty for four days with the closure since school is also out Monday for the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday.

Friday’s home basketball doubleheader against the New Deal Lions will still be held as planned.

FCISD parents and staff received an automated text message from the district around 2:45 Thursday afternoon:

Good afternoon.  Due to a spike in the number of people within our school community who are either COVID positive, quarantined, or awaiting test results, we have decided to cancel school tomorrow.  Since there is no school on Monday, we are hoping that the long weekend will help slow the increasing number of cases within our community.  All extracurricular activities will still be held as scheduled.  Please stay safe and continue to stay home if you have any symptoms of the COVID-19 virus.

The coronavirus has seen a bit of a resurgence in Floyd County in recent days, with an estimated 120 active cases in the county Thursday. Floyd County recorded its second-highest single-day new case total on Monday with 19 new cases.

This is a developing story and the Record will report additional information as it becomes available.
