FLOYDADA – The New Deal Lions’ overall size and speed that matched the Floydada Whirlwinds quickness led to a decisive 64-45 win for the Lions on Friday night at Whirlwind Gym in the District 4-2A opener for both. New Deal’s size was larger than Floydada in every matchup by multiple inches and close to 20-pounds per person.
New Deal opened up with an 18-7 first-quarter advantage. At the start of the third quarter, New Deal held Floydada scoreless for five minutes which enabled the Lions to build up a lead of close to 30-points. The Whirlwinds were given very few second-chance situations due to the Lions’ domination in rebounding. Floydada also missed approximately 10 or more shots that would rim out and the type of plays that had enabled the Whirlwinds to win 17-games in their non-district schedule.
New Deal had three players score in the double-figures led by 6’4” Jayson Lacy with 20 points, followed by Jason Brazell’s 18 and Keegan Kirkland with 14. 6’4” post Leric Eaton just missed having a double-double with 12-rebounds and eight points.
Floydada junior guard Abran Castillo was held to 14-points which is nearly eight points below his season average of 22.6. Castillo was perfect at the free-throw line finishing 8-for-8. Junior Jayson Cooper made double-figures with 11 points.
