LOCKNEY – The Lockney Rotary Club heard a presentation from Lockney Volunteer Fire Department’s Justin Wright at their weekly meeting on Friday, May 13.

Wright spoke about how anyone can become a firefighter, and how they currently have 17 members, but can accommodate as many as 25 He said the biggest issue the department sometimes faces is manpower. In addition to serving as firefighters, 10 members are currently certified Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) and work on a volunteer basis in both.

Wright said as far as training, anyone who can drive can help fight fires in Lockney. They do have training for those that wish to take part ranging from a spring fire school in Lubbock or a fall school in Canyon to a week-long intensive program at Texas A&M in College Station during the summer.

Wright also spoke about the fire department’s most recent equipment, a brush truck and ambulance they received via a Fire, Ambulance and Service Trucks (FAST) grant in 2020 as well as a new grant they and the City of Lockney are applying for to purchase a new tanker and pumper truck and new rescue truck.

The department is also looking at one day moving into a larger fire station. “We’ve had to outgrow the facility that we’re in,” he told the Rotary Club.
