LUBBOCK – Two Floyd County students have received the highest awards given to 4-H members, and a longtime volunteer was recognized for his service to the community Monday night.

Kaileigh Cook of Lockney and Sydni Chesshir of Floydada were both given the ‘Gold Star’ award during a ceremony held by the Lubbock 4-H district at the Eberley Brooks Event Center. Longtime shooting sports volunteer Jerry Chappell was also recognized as a ‘Distinguished Leader’ for his 20-plus years working with the organization. In that time Chappell has led numerous 4-H youth to state competition.

Cook, the daughter of Chad and Katie Cook, is a Healthy Texas Youth Ambassador and shows livestock through 4-H. Chesshir, the daughter of Don and Christina Chessir, is a Texas Livestock Ambassador and also shows animals.

The pair join more than 118 Floyd County students who have been recognized with the Gold Star by the organization since 1930.
