FLOYDADA, TX – Testimony has concluded in the jury trial of Alberto Guerrero, Jr., as proceedings move into the next phase in Floyd County.
The trial, which began earlier this week, centers on multiple felony charges stemming from a 2025 incident that led to an armed standoff in Floydada. Guerrero is charged with aggravated sexual assault, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, felon in possession of a firearm, and theft of a firearm.
During the first two days of the trial, jurors heard testimony from the alleged victim, Floyd County Deputy Frank Robles, a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE nurse), and lab technicians who presented DNA-related evidence. Additional witnesses, including two women from Lockney Elementary, also took the stand. Prosecutors introduced photographs and physical evidence collected during the investigation.
With testimony now complete as of Wednesday, the trial will proceed to closing arguments, which are scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m. Thursday. Following closing arguments, the jury will deliberate to determine guilt or innocence on the charges.
If Guerrero is found guilty, the same jury will then move into the punishment phase of the trial. The aggravated sexual assault charge is classified as a first-degree felony under Texas law, carrying a potential sentence ranging from 5 to 99 years or life in prison.
The charges stem from a February 28, 2025 incident in the 500 block of West Lee Street in Floydada, where authorities attempted to execute felony warrants. The situation escalated into an armed standoff involving local law enforcement, the Lubbock SWAT team, and the U.S. Marshals Service before Guerrero was taken into custody.
The trial is expected to continue through the conclusion of jury deliberations. Updates will be provided as a verdict is reached.
